Literacy

In my third year I was placed in a Grade 1/2 classroom, with a student who had Cerebral Palsy. This gave me a chance to further understand what Cerebral Palsy is and ways I as a teacher could work with the student to make them feel included. Some of the ways I did this was though the use of computers/laptops. The student found it hard to write and would feel embarrassed due to how 'messy' it would be. The whole class task was for them to write a story using their knowledge of adjectives and sentence starters. They would write a draft and then edit it and write their good copy on the computer. By providig my Cerebral Palsy student the opportunity to use the laptop, gave them more confidence, and the chance to still participate in the writing task.

My literacy classroom will involve:

  • A wide range of texts, including picture and chapter books.

  • Word posters to facilitate learning and discussion.
  • Uses of ICT.
  • Modelled Teaching.
  • Shared Discussions.
  • Peer and self-assessment.
  • Formative and Summative assessment.
  • '3 Before Me'
  • Think Pair Share
  • Hands on creative activities.
  • Silent reading
  • Differentiation

Experiences In Literacy

I believe it is important for students to relate their experience to real life experiences. In my Grade 6 class, we looked at some news articles which sparked English discussion.

I aim to create a safe literacy environment, which supports all learners through their journey on improving their reading and writing. Learning will be student driven with an emphasis on collaboration and motivation to form rich content discussions to stimulate ideas.

Teacher notes from my Second year practicum. I was taking a Reading Activity using the interactive whiteboard.
This is a reading interview, I performed when getting to know my students interests.
