Teaching Strategies

Programs I have come across on my placements are:

- Inquiry

- E5 Model

- CAFE

- DEAR (Drop Everything And Read)

Inquiry

During my Third Practicum, my school used Investagative Based Learning/Inquiry/Play based. This allows the students to make meaning, construct knowledge and understandings, practise skills, immerse themselves naturally in Literacy and Numeracy and engage in productive and intrincicly motivated learning environments (PlayMatters 2013, p22). The focus on the 'Whole Child' allows the student to develop by reflecting upon their interests and influencecs such as their abilities, culture and previous learning. It encourgaes students to explore, problem solve, communicate, create, and construct.

E5 Model

I have learnt to incorperate the e5 model into my teaching. Some examples of how I used each stage are:

1. Engage

  • Tuning in activities

  • Connections with real life situations

  • Link prior learning

2. Explore

  • Cater for various levels

  • Discussions

  • Use of ICT and Books

3. Explain

  • Through various forms such as role plays, written, oral and creative forms

4. Elaborate

  • Allow students to show their work

  • Encourage discussion

  • Feedback

  • Include ICT

5. Evaluate

  • Assessment through learning goals

  • Self and Peer assessmenrs

CAFE

Students had a room designed differently every 2-3 weeks by the teachers. This room could be a, spaceship, shop, car, the list goes on! As apart of the students Inquiry, they were able to play in 'The Cafe'. This stimulated creativity and allowed the students to trial story lines, test their knowledge (eg Working with numeracy and money in the shop) and be interactive though the stimuli.
